£lo A MINUTE

OTAGO’S NATIONAL SAVINGS

An analysis made by the district organiser of national savings shows that for every minute that post office and trustee savings banks in Otago are open for business more than £lO Is received by way of national savings investments. The total received for the four months ended July 31 was £381,287, this figure representing 353 per cent, of quota requirements. The province has, since the inception of the movement, always had an enviable national savings record and continues to hold pride of place for the Dominion, both in the excess over quota requirements and also in the number of full annual quota successes recorded at the various places. With only a third of the financial year gone, 21 places out of a possible of 27, have already passed the full annual quota mark. This, together with the fact that Dunedin and Otago were the first of the main centres and provinces respectively to pass the full annual quota figure, signifies another record of thrift by the people of the province not equalled anywhere In the country. Only six places—Miller’s Flat, Mosgiel, Oturehua, Outram, Waitahuna and Wanaka—now have to gain the full quota and, with the substantial surplus in hand at each, the committee feels confident that these six places will all be successful in the very near future. Recently two weekly totals of £225 and £466 were received from Oturehua.
