FIRE CALLS
No fewer than five chimney fires were extinguished by the brigade during the week-end—two on Saturday and three yesterday. The calls on Saturday were to Carey avenue (at 12.56 p.m.), one answered by the Roslyn brigade at 5.4 p.m. to Glen avenue, while yesterday, between 9.23 a.m. and 11.29, chimney outbreaks were suppressed at houses in Byron street, Mornington. Rankeilor street and London street. Other calls on Saturday were at 7.28 p.m. to Elgin road, where some high tension wires were down, and a justifiable false alarm to Grange street at 8.3 p.m. At 8.45 a.m. yesterday the brigade was summoned to J. and W Faulkner, Ltd., in St, Andrew street, where one wall of a lean-to shed was badly charred. There was an investigation call to Jackson street at 11.11 a.m.
