RUSSIANS LEADING

GUIDED 'MISSILE RESEARCH

NO PROGRESS IN AMERICA (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 10. It is authoritatively reported that Russia has outpaced the United States in the development of long-range guided rocket weapons, states the Chicago Tribune’s Washington correspondent. Eighty Russian rockets lost their bearings and landed in Sweden and Norway. It was learned that the missiles were equipped with controls designed to guide them electronically back to their launching sites, but the controls were faulty in the case of the runaway rockets. On the other hand, the United States Army and Navy had poured out millions of dollars on guided missile research without developing an accurate long-range weapon with a heavy punch. Major-general Henry Aurand, chief of the army research section, is of the opinion that the German V2 had serious shortcomings, including inaccuracy. He added that Army Ordnance had not improved on it.
