DISASTROUS FIRE
LIME WORKS DESTROYED
EARLY MORNING BLAZE 0 (Special) OAMARU, Aug. 11. The Totara Lime Works Company’s works at Totara were completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. Shortly after 6 a.m. Mr Perry, upon whose property the works were erected, received telephone advice from a neighbour that the works were on fire, and immediately sought assistance to fight the flames. One of the company’s employees arrived shortly afterwards, and they managed to secure two motor trucks,' but nothing else was saved. No details of insurance are yet available.
The works were opened only in October of Ipst year. Large sums of money had been expended on machinery and equipment, and, although the plant had not been working to fullest capacity, the output had reached 4500 tons per month. At a meeting of directors yesterday afternoon it was decided to proceed with the immediate reconstruction of the works.
