NOTES ON THE RUNNING

(From Our Special Reporter) CHRISTCHURCH, July 28. The six amateur riders who contested the Christchurch Hunt Cup made a good showing, and the three placed horses all jumped well. Bank Raid ran oft at tne first fence, where Noble Robert, Golden Glow. Mitttens, and Master play were racing in fairly close order. Golden Glow commenced to draw out at the haltmile, and led at the top of the straight:, where Master Play lost his rider. Golden Glow won comfortably by eight lengths from Noble Robert, with Mittens two lengths away. The Pie tailed off early and finished a long way back. Lawford Steeplechase The field thinned out in the Lawford Steeplechase. The Raker dropped his rider at the first of the kennels double and Jacksonville at the sod wall which follows. Jacksonville was in charge at the time and was going well. Arctic Dawn parted with his rider in the brush at the top of the straight. The ot.icrs went on, with Bravura leading along the back from Night Prince. Roman Ned lost his rider at the top of the straight, and Night Prince supplanted Bravura, and Slayer and Appeasement were closing up. Under pressure Night Prince came on to win from Slayer and Appeasement, who were both under the whip. Bravura and Stromboli completed the course.

A Comfortable Win Special Flight scored a comfortable win in the first division of the Haldon Stakes after being well up all the way with Lorna Leigh, Beautiful, and Victory Bells. Queen’s General finished well to gain second place. Hart Royal, Robingay, Spring Water, and Handshake were the early leaders in the second division. Hart. Royal had the race won in the straight and came on to win well from Robingay and Spring Water. Spare Part. Ford Chase, and Beechwood were left. Improved Form

Spanish Main showed improved form to win the Homeby Steeplechase. He was always one of the leaders with Siglow, and was followed by As Required as they crossed the stand double. Opaltown had missed at the Kennels double. Spanish Main and Siglow led As Required over Cutts’s fence and along the back, well clear of the others. Spanish Main drew away from Siglow after landing over the Kennels double and, fencing safely over the remaining three fences,, won from As Required and Rival, who drew up to beat Siglow A Meritorious Win

Knight Crusader scored a meritorious win in the Camla Handicap as he drew 20 at the barrier. Notary, on the rails, and Runaway, were the first to show out and they led Peter Theio, Wane, Knight Crusader, Gallimanfry, and Botany round the top. Notary led with Knight Crusader into the straight from Peter Theio, Runaway, and Armont, Montello d’Oro being handy. In a hard finish Knight Crusader beat Peter Theio and Notary by narrow margins. Finalist and Runaway were close up, with Kirkella finishing next.

Longbeach Hurdles Hunting Mac at once drew clear in the Longbeach Hurdles and carried the field along at a solid pace. He was followed ■by Endurance, Test Pilot, and Sphere. Phil Boa went out at the stand hurdle. Hunting Mac was clear racing along the back, and was jumping in brilliant style. Endurance was closing on the leader at the approach to the last hurdle, but fell, and Hunting Mac came on to win from Sphere and Test Pilot, with the others out of it. Brabazon Handicap Bonny Flight began well in the Brabazon Handicap, with Whitley, Double Cross, Tutere, and Dash o' Dink next. Bonny Flight got chopped" back, and Double Cross also lost nls place. Leigh Barton soon joined Whitley in the lead, with Tutere, Monetary, Salary, and Soneri also prominent, and Money Bird moving up Dash o’ Dink and Typhoon were alao in the picture. Leigh Barton and Whitley had a four-length lead passing the halfmile and on to the home turn, with Soneri handy. Leigh Barton had Whitley beaten at the distance, but Soneri came with a good run and beat the favourite in the last stride. Dash o’ Dnik got up and made a head heat with Whitley for third place, and then came Salary, Tutere, Typhoon, Western Front, Lexia, Ganges, Tiger Tan, and Bonny Flight in the order named. Kennels Handicap Lord Elgin, Gold Lance, and Fiery Knight were the early leaders in the Kennels Handicap, and Lady Welbeck joined the leaders in a close field. Lord Elgin and Lady Welbeck led into the straight, but Detain, vigorously handled, won in a good finish from Lord Elgin and Fiery Knight. Great Chum was close up fourth, with Bittersweet and Lady Welbeck next. Gold Lance dropped back in the straight.
