FURTHER TEST PROPOSED

EXPLOSION IN DEEP WATER (P.A.) AUCKLAND. July 9. American plans for the detonation of a third experimental atom bomb to assess its effects when exploded in deep water were confirmed by the United States atomic scientists to-day. The second experiment, which involves a bomb burst in shallow water, is to take place on July 27, but because of technical difficulties the final trial will not be held until next year. Major-general Thomas F. Farrell, a member ' of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Evaluations Board, and an associate of General Groves in the production of the first bombs, said that the third and perhaps most critical test required elaborate preparations. There were two main problems. The first was to maintain the target ships in a fixed pattern where the depths were too great for them to anchor, and the second was to devise an effective means of getting the bomb deeply in the water and then detonating it. Technicians were working on these questions.
