INTRACTABLE FACTION
PEASANTS IN PHILIPPINES FRESH CLASHES REPORTED (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) MANILA, July 9. Fighting has again broken out in Central Luzon, where 155 were killed in new clashes between the military police and members of the armed peasant faction known as Hukbalahaps. The most serious affrays occurred at Santa Croz and Barrio, near Tarlac, where the military police reported that at least 1000 Hukbalahaps opposed them in a noon to midnight battle which virtually razed Barrio and left 100 peasants and three police dead. Provost-marshal General Colonel Castaneda stated, “ The Republic has completed its plans to defend its sovereignty against any subversive move, and should any lawless bands carry out their reported plans to overthrow the Government, or rise in arms, they will meet the full force of (he military.”
