MEETING OF UNION

Mr J Macmillan was in the chair at a meeting of the North Otago Rugby Union on Monday night, arid also present were—Messrs H. Cross, M. F. Woodward, J. Benson, I. M. Coutts, A. R. Low. D. S. Loder, J. Firman. W. Berry, H. Strachan, A. W. Marshall, W. Brown and the secretary (Mr J Corlett). The Weston School wrote expressing thanks for the grant of a free football, and the Otekaike School was granted a football.

The Ashburton .■•Union wrote complimenting Mr T. Cahill on his excellent exhibition of refereeing in the AshburtonSouth Canterbury Hanan Shield match in Ashburton.—lt was decided to forward a copy of the letter to Mr Cahill, and also to refer the letter to the Referees’ Association. The contribution of £1 Is from an anonymous donor was received. A request from the Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness) that the men from the frigate Whitesand Bay be invited to a football match on July 13 was received, and it was decided to write to the Mayor inviting the officers and ratings to the North Otago-Otago Sub-unions’ match on Saturday as guests of the union.—Mr Macmillan was authorised to approach the Highland Pipe Band to play at the grounds on Saturday.—lt was agreed that, owing to lower grade games being played on Saturdya, players’ passes admit players to the ground.—Mr Cross • advised that Mr C. Campbell had been appointed referee for the match, and Mr Strachan was appointed manager of the North Otago team. The proposal of the Ashburton Union that referees be interchanged for representative matches between North Otago, South Canterbury and Ashburton, whether Hanan Shield matches or not, was agreed to, provided the arrangement was kept between the three unions.

The South Canterbury Union wrote suggesting that a return representative match be played at Timaru on August 3.—The secretary was instructed to advise the South Canterbury Union that the North Otago Union preferred August 10 as the date for this match, as was suggested in an earlier letter. A message was received from the Ashburton Union stating that the union was prepared to play North Otago at Oamaru on July 27, and it was decided to advise the Waitaki Sub-union that, in view of the changed arrangements with Ashburton, the return Town v. Country match be plavcd on the" day that the North Otago team played South Canterbury at Timaru. Mr Loder was appointed to confer with the South Canterbury and Ashburton selectors in the appointment of a team from the three unions to play the Australian touring team. The Waitaki Boys’ High School was eranted permission to play a lower grade game against the Kurow District High School this morning at Milner Park. Donald Burns Shield Mr Firman reported that he had completed the woodwork of the new Donald Burns Shield. Mr Macmillan sugested that the shield should be displayed in Mr H.
