ELECTRIC POWER

FURTHER HEAVY CUTS SHOCK TO AUCKLAND BOARDS (P.A.) AUCKLAND. July 8. On top of the intensification of the cuts decided on by the Auckland Electirc Power Board this morning, came a direction from the load despatcher that from to-morrow the board must save half as much again. The notice, which was described by the general manager of the board, Mr R. H. Bartley, as a shock, was general to all supply authorities, and was received by both the Auckland and Waitemata Boards early in the afternoon. “No rain has fallen at Taupo or Mangahao, where the storage is almost nil,” stated the latest message from the load despatcher. “ Coal stocks at the King’s wharf are very low, and to safeguard the future position it is necessary to make further reductions in the allocation.”

“ For years past the officials of the Public Works Department have been gambling on a large amount of water in the lakes, and now that gamble is telling against them.” said Mr Harbutt.

It was decided to prepare a stronglyworded remit for the annual conference of the Power Boards and Supply Authorities of New Zealand in September urging the Government to install an additional thermo-generating plant as early as possible to supplement the hydro-electric schemes
