BRITISH PRODUCTION

MR NASH IMPRESSED REACHING PRE-WAR VOLUME (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 8. The possibility of television being introduced to New Zealand was examined by Mr Walter Nash before he left England. He visited the H.M.V. works at Hayes, Middlesex, where he discussed the latest developments. Mr Nash said: “ Television will come to New Zealand some day, but just when is difficult to estimate.”

When me met Sir Stafford Cripps Mr Nash also discussed the supply of steel to the Dominion. The steel trade in Britain is passing through a difficult phase, but Mr Nash emphasised the Dominion’s imperative need for steel both for general manufacturing and supplying foodstuffs. During a visit to Leicester Mr Nash was given a civic reception. He talked with manufacturers and visited plants for making typewriters and tubes. Commenting on his visit to Britain, which began with the conference of Commonwealth Prime Ministers, Mr Nash said: “I was impressed by the way British manufacturers are getting down to production. While the prices of some commodities are high, it looks as though the output is reaching its pre-war volume and in some cases exceeding it. If the present drive and policy are continued it appears that the objective of exporting 75 per cent, more than before the war may be realised at a reasonably early date.”
