PORT CHALMERS v. ALHAMBRA

A SCRAPPY GAME Alhambra had the advantage of the north-east wind in the first spell in the match against Port Chalmers, at the Caledonian Ground, but although the halfback, R Stewart, passed smoothly from the scrums, the Alhambra outside backs could not take advantage of the many opportunities which came their way. Similarly J Scoles, the Port Chalmers halfback, although his work was not as effective as that of Stewart, also sent his backs away several times, but here again the passing quickly broke down. The forwards were fairly evenly matched, but the Port forwards began to lag in (lie second half. A Port forward, early in the second spell, threw away a probable try when in a forward rush he found himself clear with the ball lying in front of him. He foolishly stopped to pick it up and paid the penalty. There was a lot of indiscriminate kicking by the backs and forwards on both sides, and much faulty play F. Dunn, wing-threequarter, scored early In the first spell for Alhambra, and J Henderson scored for Port in a dribbling rush. There was 1 action in the second spell, but little concerted play, and just before time J. Smith, first-five-eighths, scored from a scrum for Port. None of the three tries' was converted, and Port won by 6 points to 3 points. Mr D. A. Kilgour was the referee.
