LABOUR’S WAY

Sir,—Recently in the Daily Times a writer signing himself “ puzzled ” seems to doubt Mr Semple's statement that when he took up the reins of office thousands of men had not had a decent meal for four years. I believe that to be the truth, and what about the women and children in this country? Jt was deplorable. Your correspondent says that the health of the people was never better than in those days. Does he suggest that we go back to the sugar bag and food depots again? True doctors are busy, as under the social security system we can now get treatment, whereas before we had to do a pefish, as we could not afford doctors’ fees, but now the employer and employee benefit under the Labour Party’s system of medical attention. Chemists are not making fortunes, as some imagine. They are getting a square deal, the same as everybody • else so far as possible. Yes. hospitals are full, and so are the cemeteries, but that is not the fault of the party in power now. “ Puzzled ” asks what is wrong? The answer is that we were never better off in our lives. We are in paradise compared to other countries, so I advise

“ Puzzled " to cheer "up. I do, not agree with all the Labour Party’s ideas, but it is the best party that has been on the Treasury benches in this country, and long may it hold office.—l am, etc., Dunedin, July 5. Arthur Picard.
