THE TRANSPORT SYSTEM
Sir,—J B. Smith in his comparison of three cities says: “ Why cannot you hospitable Dunedinites wake up to your own civic shortcomings? Now, Sir, this transport correspondence is for that purpose, and it has shown our transport system s failure, which has been talked about by visitors to our city. Why do the citizens of this city put up with the old fourwheel tramcars? If we had had vision, we would have had modern tramcars and a splendid track for the safety and comfort of passengers. I consider the tram service fast enough for the old cars we still have on the track, and for the traffic-carrying capacity of our streets. There are too many stoppages on the different sections, both north and south. Our transport manager can see with the old “ dog-boxes," and the tram tracks in disrepair, what a wide-awake corporation we have. As to the dig about our pockets being touched, I can only say if the Dunedin streets were kept in the same state after the introduction of trolley buses as they are now, half of the fares taken in the trolley buses would be required for the upkeep of the tyres.—l am, etc., Trampcr.
