CATHOLIC CLUBS
ANNUAL COMPETITIONS The third annual junior competitions under the auspices of the Federated Catholic Clubs was held in Dunedin during the week-end, when representatives of five of the Otago Catholic secondary schools met for competitions in debating, oratory, elocution, religious questions and impromptu speaking. The schools taking part were St, Dominic’s College, St. Philomena’s College, Christian Brothers’ High School, St. Kevin’s College and St. Patrick's College, Teschemakers.
Bishop O’Neill and the president of the Federated Clubs, Mr G. A. Walls, welcomed the competitors to the Catholic Youth Centre prior to the first competition on Saturday morning.
The speaking during the competitions was of an improved standard and reflected credit on the teachers responsible for the training of the speakers. The competitions resulted as follows: — Prepared Debate, “That a Vigorous Immigration Policy is the Solution of New Zealand’s Population Problem.”— Christian Brothers’ High School (P. Toomey and K. Lockhart) 1, St. Patrick's College (Miss M. Griffin and Miss M. McCarthy) 2, St. Dominic’s College (Miss R. Waigth and Miss I. Lynch) 3. Best speaker in debate: P. Toomey. Impromptu Speech, “If You Were Marooned on a Desert Island, What Two Books Would You Take with You, and Why?’’—Christian Brothers’ High School (W. Blackwood) 1, St. Patrick’s College (Miss M. Millar) 2. St. Philomena’s College (Miss M. Heenan) 3. Elocution.—Christian Brothers’ High School (M. Fahey) 1, St. Dominic’s College (Miss R. Lamb) 2, St. Philomena’s College (Miss M. Turnbull) 3. Religious Questions—St. Patrick’s College (Miss K. Reilly) 1, St. Dominic’s College (Miss M. McCornbe) 2, St. Philomena’s College (Miss I. Truesdale) 3. Oratory—Christian Brothers' High School (R. Muirhead) 1, St. Philomena’s College (Miss J. Cole) 2, St. Dominic’s College (Miss M. Graham) 3 The shield points arc as follows. — Christian Brothers’ High School, Dunedin, 14; St. Patrick’s College, Teschemakers, 8; St. Dominic’s College, 6; St. Philomena’s College, 5: St. Kevin’s College nil. The judges were Messrs G. D. O’Connell, S. E. Mee, the Rev. Father Bennett, Mr J. B Cull and Mrs M F. O'Sullivan.
