FINED FOR SMUGGLING

SEAMEN ON MONTEREY LIMITED TIME TO PAY (Rec. 11 p.m) SYDNEY, July 5. United States seamen from the liner Monterey, due to sail as a bride ship to-morrow morning, will have to find money to-day for fines ranging up to £IOO each or go to gaol. After the men had been convicted of smuggling cigarettes and other dutiable goods ashore, the agents for the company said they would not pay the fines. An officer said: “They will have to pay it themselves or take the rap.” The ship will sail on schedule with or without the men, carrying 725 passengers, including 320 Australian wives and children of American servicemen. After 16 men had been fined in the Federal Court this afternoon the Crown made it clear that only a few hours could be allowed to pay.
