NOTES FROM RICCARTON
BITTER SWEET IN WORK (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. J. M. Olive has taken over Bill Gundi, Vulnerable, and a four-year-old Salmagundi mare, the three horses that A. McAulay had in hand for Mr A. Fairbairn. In the meantime, the arrangement is only temporary, McAulay wishing to be relieved for Ihe winter, but he may decide to retire from training altogether. C. Emerson has returned to the track with his horses, which were freshened up with a few weeks of exercise on the roads. Double Cross and Deficiency will be got ready to race at the Grand National meeting, but Avonbridge, Battle Area, and Periwig will not be required till later, probably Ashburton or Geraldine. Armont is back in work, in good health after a spell. This Defaulter three-year-old is a good staying prospect for next season. Bitter Sweet has resumed strong work with the other members of H. Nurse’s team. Though a great disappointment in the autumn, she looks in good health now, so improved form may be expected from her in the new season. She is an attractive galloper and she sticks on in her races.
E. J. Jennings is working a wellgrown four-year-old who shapes as if he would make a useful jumper. He is by Sky Pilot, who was a good steeplechaser, and his dam is by Shambles from Matchbox, by Buccleuch from Fireside, also the dam of Fireiron, a Great Easter winner. Bannockburn and Appeasement were mates this morning over two rounds of the steeplechase fences, Prince Dolomite going with them for the first round, when he was pulled up. The three horses jumped in fine style.
