A NEW JET ENGINE
REVOLUTIONARY TYPE DEVELOPMENT IN AMERICA WASHINGTON, June 9. The Navy Department announced that it had developed a revolutionary “ ram ” jet engine weighing 701 b, developing upwards of 3000 horsepower and capable of driving a plane 1500 miles an hour. The ram is sometimes called the “Flying Stovepipe.” It works at high speed only. It will be switched on when rocket power has brought the plane’s speed up to 800 miles an hour. The operating principle is that the engine tajees in air compressed by the plane’s speed. The injection of the fuel causes an explosion, resulting in an exhaust thrust providing propulsion similar to the standard jet motor. The ram possesses the advantage that it has no moving parts. Tests thus far have been limited to sending experimental engines hurtling into the air on their own, like a rocket.
