SYDNEY INSTITUTION CLOSING SYDNEY, June 11. The British Centre, the main task of which has been to accommodate and entertain members of the British Pacific Fleet, will be closed on Friday. There are now fewer than 200 shorebased Royal Navy personnel in Sydney, and they are to leave in the air-craft-carrier Victorious at the end of July. Pacific Fleet ships in the harbour have about 2300 men on board, and there are 300 R.A.F. personnel awaiting discharge in Sydney camps. Replying to allegations that the closing of the centre would leave demobilised British servicemen stranded in Sydney, the manager of the centre said that only one-fifth of the centre’s accommodation was being used. Orders to close had come from the Com-mander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet.
