MARITIME DISPUTE
SUGGESTED SOLUTION PAYMENT OF CASH BONUS WASHINGTON, June 10. The Federated conciliators in the maritime dispute suggested that the seamen should be paid a cash bonus for hours worked over a fixed limit within the present 56-hour week. A Labour Department official explained that such a bonus plan is separate from the question of overtime pay, which would still apply to all hours worked beyond 56. The Seamen’s Union demanded a 44hour week, and repeated that the declared strike was inevitable unless the weekly hours were reduced from 56. In the meantime the Labour Subcommittee of the House decided to hold hearings on the dispute in an effort lo arrive at a Congressional solution before the strike deadline.
