POLITICS BANNED

THE BRAZILIAN ARMY LONG TRADITION BROKEN (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 11. The Brazilian Minister of War, General Goes Montairo, has ordered ths army not to participate in politics, thus breaking a long tradition, says the Rio de Janiero correspondent of the New York Times. The army throughout the Republic’s history has been politically active, and has often played a decisive role. General Montairo issued the order as a result of an Opposition motion paying a tribute to the forces for ousting Dr Getulio Vargas in October, 1945. General Montairo said that following Brazil’s participation in the war with Italy, a new mentality had developed. The General Staff had aimed to keep the army away from politics, as in the United States.
