CONFERENCE PROPOSED RESTRAINT ON COMPETITION (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 11. The British Workers’ Group at the world maritime conference at Seattle proposed a “ Bretton Woods Conference” on international shipping. Captain Douglas Smith-Tennant, general secretary of the British Engineers. Navigators, and Engineer Officers’ Union, told the plenary session that the resolution introduced by Mr Charles Jerman. the British workers' delegate, urging the creation of an international shipping authority, was not inspired by party politics. “ Surely in humanity’s interests, a shipping conference is as important as one on finance," Captain SmithTennant said. The resolution proposed the formulation of a policy to restrain international competition. The Indian and Chinese delegates demanded a fair share of the world’s tonnage for their countries.
