SPECTACULAR DISPLAY

BLAZE OF ALTERNATING LIGHT SYDNEY; Mar.- 29. ' A spectacular display of the Aurora Australis was seen by thousands of people in Southern New South Wales last night between 7.15 and midnight. A blaze of alternating blue and green light illuminated the southern sky. The Commonwealth observatory staff at Mount Strombo, led by the Commonwealth astronomer, Dr ! Woolley, watched the phenomenon from soon after sundown. Dr Woolley said •it was the best ■specimen of an aurora he had seen since he was in Britain in 1938: "On that occasion, the depth of the Aurora Borealis covered the skies of Europe. Normally one had to, go to the southern tip of New Zealand to have a good look at the Aurora Australis.” Reception of wireless messages to Australia became impossible because of static.
