FOOD FOR BRITAIN

PURCHASES IN CANADA NO EFFECT ON RATIONING (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON-, Mar. 27 The Ministry of Food announced that Britain is purchasing all the beef, mutton, bacon, and ham Canada can spare in 1946, and also probably for the years 1947-48. This was agreed at a conference between the Minister of Food (Sir Ben Smith) and the Canadian Minister of Agriculture (Mr J G. Gardiner). Canada is doing her utmost to maintain supplies as high as possible, and the present contract for supplying 125,000,0001 b of cheese a year will be extended for another year. Six hundred thousand cases of powdered milk a year will be supplied until March, 1948. In 1947, 1750,000 cases of shell eggs and 5000 tons of dried eggs will be supplied. The Ministry emphasised that the purchases will not make any immediate difference to rationing in Britain.
