SHORTAGE LIKELY

TOBACCO AND CIGARETTES NON-DELIVERY OF CERTAIN BRANDS Dunedin is likely to be faced with a serious shortage of tobacco and cigarettes early next week. Owing to a waterfront dispute ip Wellington, the Waipahi, which was scheduled to bring stocks of popular brands to Dunedin for the mid-month delivery to merchants, did not arrive at the port, and the only other ship for Dunedin, the Breeze, was fully booked. The tobacco which has been available since February 4 for shipping to Dunedin from one of the manufacturing firms is, therefore, still in Wellington. Local merchants received advice yesterday that the manufacturers had been informed by the Union Steam Ship Company that to-day was the earliest on which a ship for Dunedin would arrive in Wellington. As a result, the manufacturers stated, it would be at least next Wednesday before the merchants received' any stocks.
