EVENING SERVICE

The sermon was preached by Bishop Wilson at the evening service held in St. Paul’s Cathedral last night. The congregation was so large that many people were unable to find seats and had to stand at the rear of the church or in the vestibule. Taking as his text, “ For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind,” (Timothy ii), Bishop Wilson drew freely on his experiences in a Japanese prison camp to illustrate the power of Christian love to transcend the dread of physical ill-treatment. It was only the knowledge that they had commended their spirits to God that gave many of the prisoners the courage to carry on in the conditions enforced on them. The speaker also dealt with the importance of the synod in planning the work of the church.
