FREEDOM OF FRENCH PRESS MENTION IN NEW CONSTITUTION (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 14. The new French Constitution will not specifically guarantee the freedom of the press if it is passed in the form proposed at to-day’s meeting of the Assembly Constitutional Commission, says Reuter’s Paris correspondent. The Commission rejected the addition of the phrase “ the freedom of the press is guaranteed ” to a clause dealing with freedom of speech and opinion. Catholic Left Radicals voted for the inclusion of the clause, and the Socialists and Communists voted against it. The voting, 20 to 16, was the same against the amendment abolishing the present system whereby newspapers and periodicals must receive the Government’s permission to publish.
