ARMY DISCHARGES

MEN ON INDEFINITE LEAVE ACTION TO BE TAKEN SHORTLY (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4. The many thousands of army personnel at present on indefinite leave without pay will receive their discharges shortly. Instructions to this effect have been received from army headquarters by southern military district headquarters and the various area offices which will carry out the actual machinery work. The instructions will be put into effect almost immediately. The classes affected are:— „ , __ _ (a) Personnel of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. who have returned to New Zealandl from overseas and been placed onl indefinite leave without pay will be discharged from the 2nd N.Z.E.F. (b) Personnel of the New Zealand Temporary Staff held in area pools or on indefinite leave without pay will be discharged from the temporary staff. Those under the age of 40 years on June 1, 1946, and of medical grades I of 11, who were formerly on thei strength of a territorial unit, will \>m transferred to the reserve of Ne\« Zealand defence forces at the sam*B time as being discharged from thca New Zealand Temporary Staff. 1 (c) The personnel of the New Zea-^ land Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps are to be discharged. . . (d) The personnel of the territorial force who on June 1, 1946, will have reached the age of 40 years and those under such age who are not of medical grades I or II are to be discharged from the territorial force. (e) All persons who are carried on the strength of an area pool and have not been posted to a unit of the armed forces are to be discharged with the following exceptions—(l) Single personnel who on. January 1, 1946, will be under the age of 36 years, have never been posted to a unit, and have never been examined by a duly constituted medical board, or if they were so examined were classified grade I; (2) any person who has failed to render the service required of him under the provisions of the National Service Emergency Regulations. As officers, including the New Zealand Army Nursing Service and the New Zealand Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps are dealt with by notice in the New Zealand Gazette, the provisions of the memorandum do not apply to them The reason for discharge will be shown in each case, a special order to be issued by the area offices. Action to complete the discharge will not be taken until all the administrative requirements, such as medical boarding and clearance of kit, are completed.
