LONDON’S NEW AIRPORT

WORLD’S FINEST RUNWAY LONDON, Jan. 1.

The finest runway in the world was the description given oy the Minister of Civil Aviation, Lord Winster to 3000 yards of concrete from which a Lancastrian Starlight took off for South America to-day, marking the first use by a civil plane of Heathrow, London's new £20,000,000 airport.

Lord Winster said no other aerodrome would be superior to Heathrow when it was completed. In addition to the main runway, which has been com. pleted, Heathrow would have two others each 2000 yards long and 100 yards wide. Heathrow covered an area of 1500 acres, with a difference in levels of only sft from end to end. Some buildings at present on the airport were temporary, but the control tower was completed. The question of special railway access from London was being discussed, and it was hoped to bring the airport within 20 minutes of the capital.
