SUCCESSFUL GYMKHANA The gymkhana held on the Wetherstones racecourse on Boxing Day proved to be as successful as previous functions organised bv the Lawrence Gymkhana Club. Despite the adverse weather the gate takings showed a drop of only £5. and, although the prize money was increased, a considerable sum will be available for the fund for the erection of a children’s playground. Entertainment was provided by Piper W. Milne and Misses P Reid, W. Mussen, E. Bevin, and McHardy (Highland dances), and a musical programme by the Tapanui Brass Band. „ , The Mayor, Mr W. J. Suters, expressed appreciation of the support accorded the club, especially thanking the Tuapeka Countv Jockev Club and Mr P. Cranley for the use of the grounds. SCHOOL FUNCTIONS The final function of the Lawrence District High School for the year was held in the Town Hall, when parents, children and friends took part in folk dancing. The accompanist was Mrs F. J. Grey. Brief addresses were given by the chairman of the School Committee, Mr W. E. Duthie, who presented the dux medals to Catherine McCorkindale (senior) and Pat Rawlinson (primary), the Mayor, Mr W J. Suters, who presented the leaving certificates, and the headmaster, Mr A. F. Rawlinson. A special feature of the function was the singing of Christmas carols by the combined school and the presentation of a novelty item, " The Chick Song,” by eight pupils. The Tuapeka West School concluded the vear with a concert and dance held in the school. Items were presented by the children, assisted by Mesdamcs- N.

Steel and W. Cowan, Les Roughan and the Misses Bulfin. The chairman, Mr R. Wilson, presented each child with a prize, and expnessed appreciation of the teaching work done by Miss Johnstone.
