GOLF TOURNAMENT

DUNEDIN CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL STAGE REACHED A high southerly wind and rain squalls made conditions unpleasant for the qualifying rounds of the Dunedin Amateur Golf Championship and the Otago Junior Championship, conducted by the St. Clair Club on the Corstorphine links on Monday, and as a result the standard of golf suffered ro some extent. The course was heavy after the recent rain. In the circumstances the veteran St. Clair golfer, D. C. Bennie, played an excellent game to qualify first in the senior championship with 166. He returned an 82 in the morning round, nine over par, and he took only two strokes more in the afternoon. His total was six strokes better than the next two players to qualify, J. Scouler and A. McLean. Two rounds of match play were played yesterday in conditions which were much better than those of the first- day. Bennie, who won the Alex. Sime Cup for the best aggregate score in the qualifying rounds, won both his matches fairly comfortably, defeating S. C. Gourley 6 and 4, and L. B. Whinam 3 and 2. He played consistently all day. The other semifinalists are J. F. Byers (Belleknowes), J. Scouler (Otago), and L. C. Brown (Otago). These four will contest the semi-finals this morning, and the final will be played in the afternoon. The senior championship drew an entry of 30 players from ail the Dunedin clubs, as well as from places as far afield as Auckland. The following is a list of those who qualified:—

First Round.—Bennie beat Gourley 6 and 4, Whinam beat Gray 4 and 3, Burgess beat Woods 1 up at the nineteenth, Byers beat Sime 4 and 3, Scouler beat Grimsdale 5 and 4, Mclntosh beat Sams 4 and 3, McKay beat Doogue 5 and 3, Brown beat McLean 1 up. Second Round. —Bennie beat Whinam 3 and 2, Byers beat Burgess 4 and 3, Scouler beat Mclntosh 6 and 5. Brown beat McKay 1 up. Junior Championships The Otago Junior Championship, for which 26 entries were received, was also advanced to the semi-final stages and the four left in comprise the first four to qualify—J. H. Randall, I. A. McLean, J. R. Hyslop and A. E. Timms. * The following players qualified:—
