NOTES ON THE RUNNING.

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 1. Burt Scott took the lead after half a mile in the Mason Handicap. Loyal Friend headed him three furlongs from home, where Clockwork and Shadow Maid were next. Burt Scott then retired. Dusky Sound staged a fine finishing run and beat Clockwork decisively, with Shadow Maid just edging Loyal Friend out of third place. Led All the Way Bulldozer led all the way for an easy win in the Telegraph Handicap, making his tally five in succession, all of them at Addington. Loyal Friend, second three furlongs from home, hung on well, while Shadow Maid, with a late dash, was third, beating Haughty, who tired. Cabin Boy was second for seven furlongs. Opponents Outclassed Sir Michael outclassed his opponents in the Charles Cross Stakes. He was in fifth place when Globe Direct took the lead half a mile from home, and, though still only fourth to the straight, he moved up fast wide out and had the race in safe keeping a long way from home. Worthy Gold easily beat the others, and Czardas stayed on for third, beating Globe Direct, who tired. Progressive Handicap Rival Chief tired after leading to tli« \home turn in the Progressive Handicap. Parwrack then took charge, but Royal Dale wore him dpwn near the post. Desmond's Pride finished well four lengths back. Middleton Handicap Jill collapsed after leading to the home turn in the Middleton Handicap, leaving Dillondale in charge, but Liberty Bond got up on the post for a dead heat, while Grattan Bells beat Margaret Hall in the last stride for third. Hornby Handicap Invigorator was in front when he stumbled starting the last round in the Hornbv Handicap. Willie Winkie and Jimmy Dillon being interfered with. Firewater then went on in the lead. Forewarned took second place three furlongs from home and won decisively from Jimmv Dillon, who made up a lot of gr ound, while Steel King finished strongly for third. Selwyn Handicap Karangi was in front after three furlongs in the Selwyn Handicap, Cameronian and Native Scott following him till three furlongs from home. Cameroman then dashed away to a lead of four lengths, but tired in the straight, and in an exciting finish Loyal King made a ate dash to beat Native Scott in the last stride, with Cameronian close up. ana Scott Axworthy fourth. Prebbleton Handicap ElvVs Pride led Scottish Lady and Golden Shadow in the Prebbleton Handicap till three furlongs from home, where Preeminence was third. Lucky Loyal then moved up, taking the lead when the straight was reached, but Loyal Nurse made a late dash to beat him. Scottish Lady hung on for third, with Gallant Maid fourth.
