SWEPT BY FIRE

ISLAND OFF NORTH AUCKLAND DEFENCE BUILDINGS DESTROYED (P.A.) WHANGAREI, Elec. 31. A spectacular blaze, which l wai visible over practically the entire Bay of Islands area, swept a considerable portion of Moturoa Island yesterday and to-day. A number of army and navy buildings, including a large store, were destroyed. Tenders for the purchase of a number of these buildings closed on Saturday. The navy huts in the cove facing Pai’nia caught fire last night, and within an hour the army huts on top of the ridge at the most distant point of the island were ablaze. Moturoa was covered with light scrub. The small and prettier island of Motumarie was similarly swept by fire on Boxing Day.
