OBITUARY
MR ROBERT COULTER, M.P. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 31. The deatn occurred at Timaru today oi Mr Robert' Coulter. M.P. for Raglan,' after a long illness. Mr Coulter was born in Christchurch in 1891. He settled in Te Aroha. where he was for more than 20 years a member of the Borough Council and many years Mayor. He was also a member of the Thames Harbour Board for nearly 20 years, serving several terms as chairman. Mr Coulter was first elected to Parliament in 1905. when as a Labour supporter he was returned bv the Waikato electorate. He was defeated by Mr J. M. Allen for the Hauraki seat at the 1938 election, but was returned by the Raglan electorate in 1943. MR THEODORE DREISER HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 30. The death is reported of the author, Mr Theodore. Dreiser, from a heart attack. Mr .Dreiser, who was /4, had had a distinguished literary career, and • was associated ’ with many of America’s leading journals He. was at one time editor of Smith s Magazine, and editor-in-chief of the several Butterick Dublications. •. LatGi he became editor of the American Spectator. He wrote many novels, plays, essays and other works, the best-known of which was ''An American Tragedy” which W as filmed.
