CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES STEELE AND LEPVIIKMANN LEAD (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 1. The eighth round results in the Victory Chess Congress to-night still leave Steele and Lepviikmann (Wellington) in the lead. The latter, with a win against Darwin (Canterbury), has 7 points (six wins and two draws), and Steele 6£ points. Steele’s match against Stewart (Canterbury) to-night was adjourned with the chances even. Abbott (Canterbury) retains third place with 6 points. Wade, the present champion, is fourth with 5i points, having wins against McGllvray and in the adjourned game against Kelling. McNabb (Wellington) has 5 points and one adjourned game against Gyles. Stewart (Canterbury) has 4 points and one adjourned game. Key games ‘in the championship draw for to-morrow afternoon are: Lepviikmann v. Stewart, and Steele v. Abbott. Other games are: Wade v. Darwin, Kelling v. McGilvray, Gyles v. Hardy, Mrs Abbott v. McNabb. Miss Hallis (Auckland) leads in the major open tourney with 6 points from Wood (Wellington) and Sim (Palmerston North), each si, and Webling (Wellington) 5 with one adjourned game against Mitchell (Canterbury), who has 4J points. Webb (Canterbury) leads in the first class tourney with 6 wins. Woolley (Canterbury), with four wins and two losses, is at present in second place.
