FRENCH SECRET SERVICE
FUNCTIONS RESTRICTED PARIS, Dec. 30. General de Gaulle’s secret service, D.G.E.R. (Direction General des Etudes et Renseignements), which leftwing quarters criticise as undemocratic, will have its functions reduced and name changed from to-day. Reuter’s correspondent says it will operate in future only outside French territory and will be known as S.D.E.C.E. (Service de Documentation Exterieur et de Contre-espionage). Instead of being under the authority of General de Gaulle it will be controlled by an inter-Ministerial committee of 12 in which General de Gaulle is included.
