SHAKEN BY EXPLOSION

AUSTRALIAN MINING TOWN POLICE INVESTIGATIONS SYDNEY, Dec. 30. Part of Captain’s Flat, a mining settlement about 40 miles from Canberra, on the southern tablelands, was wrecked last night by a violent gelignite explosion. Senior police officers were sent from Goulburn and Sydney. The explosion wrecked part of a club in which about 15 persons were playing billiards or looking on. It smashed the walls of adjoining houses and shattered windows 100 yards away. Twenty-three persons escaped with minor shock and there were no serious injuries. Experienced miners estimate that there must have been 51b of gelignite placed under one corner of the club. The police have not yet been able to establish a motive for the outrage.
