JUGOSLAV REPUBLIC
RECOGNISED BY BRITAIN UNITED STATES RESERVATIONS (Rec. 10.20 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 23. Britain has recognised the new Jugoslav Republic in a Note handed to the Jugoslavian Ambassador in London yesterday. It is in rSply to a iNote received from Jugoslavia on December 8, declaring that Jugoslavia had established a Federative People’s State in republican form, and abolished thie dynasty of Kara Georgevitch and deprived King Peter of all his rights. The British reply says the Government recognises the changed Constitution in Jungoslavia, and assumes that the new Government is accepting the responsibility of existing international obligations, and also that the interests and rights of British subjects m Jugoslavia will not be affected. The United States has also extended formal recognition to the new Jugoslav Government, and has announced the appointment of Mr Richard Patterson at Belgrade. At the same time, the State Department has released instructions to Mr Patterson, criticising the recent Jugoslav elections as not fully free, and recalling that Jugoslavia has not honoured her pledges to extend basic freedoms to her people. It is added that the United States wishes to make it clear that the establishment of diplomatic relations should not be interpreted as approval of Marshal Tito’s policies.
