JEWISH IMMIGRATION

AT STANDSTILL IN PALESTINE BRITISH DECISION AWAITED (Rec. 10.15 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 23. Jewish immigration to Palestine has now stopped altogether, says the Observer’s Jerusalem correspondent, since Mr Ernest Bevin’s statement that 500 Jews would be allowed to enter Palestine every month pending the Joint Commission’s report. The Arab leaders expressed opposition to any continuance of immigration. The correspondent added that at present it appears as if the Palestine Government has. no authority to issue further certificates to immigrants and Palestine is awaiting the decision of the British Government, which must now decide whether immigration is ceasing or continuing against Arab wishes. The issue is of great importance in the Middle East and the* decision may set off the powder barrel which is needing only one spark for ignition.
