SHUNTING FATALITY

(P.A.) DANNEVIRKE, Dec. 22. Leo Hamilton Clarke, a relieving shunter, aged 36, a resident of Ashhurst, was accidentally killed early this morning while shunting a wagon from a mixed train at the Oringi siding. He leaves a wife and four children. London backs came again with a good movement, and then Hall failed with a field goal. Chapman kept the pressure on with a line kick to the corner, but play was edged back to near halfway. The game finished with the most spectacular movement of the day. Backs and forwards joined in a passing rush, the ball going out to Afgus. who swerved infield, passing several men, before being downed. He got the ball away and Kearney was on hand to gather a pass, and sent on to Thornton, who crashed over at the corner in a tackle. Cook kicked yet another goal, and the game ended:— N.Z.E.F !. 30 points London Nil This match was regarded as a dress rehearsal for the Wednesday game against the unbeaten Cardiff side, which has played 16 games and is acclaimed the best team in Britain at present. The success of to-day's backline indicates that the New Zealanders have found the best rearguard combination, and that with the forwards the problem will be that of elimination. The team will leave for Cardiff on Monday, and in view of its heavy commitments in Wales, will celebrate Christmas this evening with a party of Tuis in the Fernleaf Club.
