OLD BOYS BEAT KAIKORAI

NARROW FIRST INNINGS WIN Old Boys beat Kaikorai by 15 runs on the first innings. On the previous Saturday Old Boys had batted all afternoon for the moderate total of 150 runs, to which Kaikorai replied with 135. Old Boys commenced its second innings at 4.30 p.m, and when stumps were drawn an hour later had lost seven wickets for 74 runs. The’ Bishopscourt wicket was less difficult than on the previous day, but gave considerable assistance to the spinning ball. When Kaikorai’s opening batsmen went to the wickets the task of making 150 runs did not appear formidable, especially in view of the fact that Old Boys were without the services of A. W. Roberts, its outstanding bowler, and also of its wicketkeeper, G. H. Mills. Moreover, the captains had agreed that the two vacancies in the Kaikorai side caused by the absence of A. Rennick and L. Watt were to be filled by substitutes, who were allowed to bat. Kaikorai, however, started badly. V. J. Leader, the Old Boys’ skipper, found that the wicket gave his off-spinner assistance, and with this ball he clean bowled both N. Lawson and C. Allcott before either was set. Within an hour five wickets had fallen for 50 odd runs. G. McGregor and K. Burke then became associated and attacked the bowling—which had momentarily deteriorated—with lusty drives and hooks. When both were well set and appeared to have the bowling in hand, they played careless shots and got themselves out. McGregor (21) mis-drove a ball from Leader to E. Scott at extra cover, and Burke (30) skied one to R. Hunt at mid-off. Apart from E. Cameron (26), none of the other batsmen offered much resistance and at 4.20 p.m. the side was all out for 135. The Old Boys’ fielding was particularly good. Nothing depended on the Old Boys’ second innings, which was notable for the carelessness of the batsmen’s efforts and for the fine wicketkeeping of N. Lawson, who stumped three batsmen and caught one. The following are the scores:— Old Boys 1 First innings 150 Second Innings R. Mills, c Welham, b McGregor .. 9 D.
