TRAFFIC JAMS
RAILWAY STAMPEDES EFFECT OF RESTRICTIONS (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 23. Sensational scenes were witnessed at the Central railway station when women fainted, children were lost, and people were knocked down in crowds yesterday. Railway officials struggled to cope with the worst jam they had ever experienced, particularly to protect mothers with children, who fared badly in the rushes for trains. The curtailed tail service was insufficient, and transport was terrific. Crowds overflowed from some trains and waited up to four hours. Railway officials said some people found the going so rough that they went home. One official said, “People were like wild beasts.” Another stampede occurred yesterday afternoon, when Randwick racegoers stormed the main paddock gates immediately after the last race, causing one of the biggest jams in Sydney racing history. The erdwd swept aside the 20 police on duty in an attempt to gain seats in the limited transport available. Thousands were forced to walk„back to the city. Trams took people to the racecourse, but all tram traffic was stopped for the week-end at 2 p.m.
