SCHOOLS’ BREAK-UP Owing to the prevalence of measles and other sickness amongst children, file usual break-up ceremonies at St. Joseph’s and the Toko High Schools were abandoned this year. Father Rooney visited the homes of children attending St. Joseph's School and presented the usual gifts. The principal awards were;—Gold cross for Christian doctrine, Joan Harvey; dux of school, Clare Graham; best allround girl, Joan Graffin, The ceremony at the Toko High School was presided over by Mr R. A. Morgan (chairman of the School Committee), who had associated with him Mr C. Keinan (Mayor of Milton) and the Rev. H. Hook. Each speaker congratulated the pupils on the year's work, and Mr Keinan presented certificates to 32 pupils of Form 11, and Mr Hook, on behalf of the Bible "Society of Otago and Southland, presented each with a New Testament. A large number of parents and residents attended a concert in the Tokoiti Hall on the occasion of the Tokoiti School break-up. A lengthy and varied programme was enjoyed, and Mr G. G. woodhead (acting chairman) presented certificates to the pupils concerned. The floor was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by Miss F. Dolan and Mr J. McHardy. Mr R. Carr was the M.C. BOWLING Three rinks of women and men from the Mosgiel Bowling Club visited Milton on Tuesday and won an informal match by 10 points. Mrs Clark 15, Fowler, Mrs. Leith, McKerrow, Mrs Gibson 20; Tiffany, Mrs Wilson, Jane, Mrs Davidson 14, Roberts, Mrs Roberts, Stevenson, Mrs Woodward 21; totals, Milton 46 points, Mosgiel 56 points. MUSIC EXAMINATIONS The following Milton candidates were successful in the recent practical examinations conducted in Dunedin by the Royal Schools of Music (London): —Grade IV: Intermediate Pass with credit, Beverley Aitken (Dominican Convent). Grade V: Higher—Pass, Rhonda Stroud (Mrs Dickson). Grade IV: Lower—Distinction, Alison Grant (Miss Curran); pass, Margaret Bruce (Mrs Dickson). Grade II: Elementary—Pass, Margaret Adam (Mrs Dickson). Grade I: Primary —Distinction, Coralie Illingworth (Convent); credit, Bernadette O’Sullivan (Convent); pass. Norma Kennard (Convent), Beverley Millar (Convent); preliminary, Marie Leonard (Convent). SOCIAL EVENINGS Prior to her marriage to Mr T. Haynes, Miss Ethel Collings was the guest of honour at a “ kitchen ” evening held in the Helensbrook Hall. She was also entertained at a “bathroom” evening at the home of Mr and Mrs W. McLean, and at a “ gift ” evening at the residence of Mr and Mrs B. J. Healey (Kiness). Miss Marie Gabites, who was married last Saturday, was entertained at a “ kitchen ” evening at the residence of her aunt, Miss L. Marryatt. There were about 40 persons present. Games and competitions were held, interspersed with items by Mr G. H. Clark, Misses I. Crawford, M. Hughes and G. Robinson. Dulcie McLean presented tjie bride-to-be and Miss Marryatt with posies. OBITUARY The death occurred recently of Mr John Forrester, of Tokoiti road, at the advanced age of 82 years. The deceased was born in Fifeshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand at the age of 10 years. The family settled in Oamaru, and after working there for a time Mr Forrester came to Milton. He later married Miss Jane Neason, of Milburn, and the couple took up. residence at Tokoiti. The deceased was actively interested in the Tokoiti School as a member of the committee, and was also a member of the Social Club. His wife died about four years ago, and he is survived by a family of three sons and five daughters—Messrs John Forrester (Fairlie), William Forrester (Patearoa), Thomas Forrester (Otekaike), Mesdames T. Bell (Shannon), R. Thompson (Christchurch), C. Welsford (Invercargill), J, Field (Milton), and Miss Ada Forrester (Milton).
