EMPIRE THEATRE

DRAMA AND ROMANCE An adroit story of plausible romance, “Lake Placid Serenade,” which opened a season at the Empire Theatre yesterday, serves a four-fold purpose. It is excellent entertainment which, ordinarily, is purpose enough for a picture; secondly, it provides a novel medium for the blonde Vera Hruba Ralston to demonstrate her abilities as a dramatic actress and at the same time to perform her spectacular figure skating in a role which presents her as a champion on the ice; thirdly, it is enhanced by a notable musical score, and a fourth reason for its general excellence is the fact that story and spectacle combine to open up rare opportunities for an exceptionaly fine cast, Robert Livingston appears opposite Miss Ralston as a dashing young American business man, and ponderous Eugene Pallette is her genial uncle. Walter Catlett and William Frawley are in prominent roles, together with Vera Vague, Ruth Terry, Stephanie Bachelor, Lloyd Corrigan and others. Harry Owens and Ray Noble, the famous band men, appear with brilliant musical accompaniment, and in the course of the action there are several outstanding specialty acts. Box plans are at >the theatre and the D.I.C.
