ROWING

i NORTH END REGATTA l i QUEEN’S DRIVE WINS SENIOR FOURS The North End Rowing Club’s annual regatta, which was held over the club’s course at the boat harbour on Saturday afternoon, produced a commendably high standard of rowing, and the keen competition in the majority of the 12 events resulted in a large number of excellent finishes. In the contest for the Butterfield Shield, awarded to the club gaining the highest aggregate points in the regatta, North End again secured the trophy with a total of 271 points, Port Chalmers Being close behind with 23 points. Queen’s Drive secured 15J points, and Otago 6. The donations were distributed as follows:—North End. £lO ss; Port Chalmers £B, Queen’s Drive £5 15s, and Otago £l. The major race of the day the Senior Fours, produced the most exciting contest of the regatta. The race was won by the Queen’s Drive crew after a strenuous struggle with Port Chalmers, which put in a strong challenge over the last. 100 yards and was just beaten into second place by a canvas. The two other crews, Otago and North End were a bare length behind. A feature of the regatta was the expeditious manner .in which the events were rowed off, the*long delays that have come to be regarded as customary in local regattas being absent as the result of the firm attitude adopted by the club’s officials towards crews arriving late at the starting line. The judges were Messrs H. S. Watson, G. Mitchell, and W. G. Glengarry. Mr C. Wilson was the starter, and Mr C. Butterfield combined the duties of umpire and commentator on the races.
