OLD BOYS’ SLOW SCORING
ACCURATE BOWLING BY ALLCOTT Old Boys batted all afternoon on ft difficult wicket at Bishopscourt, the innings concluding a few minutes before 3 o’clock for 150 runs. It was not an inspiring exhibition, although little else could perhaps be expected in view of the condition of the wicket. Most of the Kaikorai bowlers obtained " lift,” especially C. F. W. Allcott, whose deliveries—and few of them were short —often came as high as the batsmen’s shoulders. Moreover, the softness of the wicket did not give the batsmen any confidence m using their feet to Allcott’s slower deliveries. Under those conditions the batsmen played cautiously, and perhaps over-cautiously, for when at 5 o'clock V. J. Leader, the Old Boys captain, told the remaining batsmen to force the pace, they scored at treble the earlier rate. At the afternoon tea adjournment, after 120 minutes’ batting, Old Boys had only 47 runs or. the board for the loss of two wickets. About 20 minutes after the resumption G. H. Mills went out Ibw to E. Camel on after a cautious and patient innings lasting 140 minutes for 32 runs. Mills showed excellent concentration. At 5 p.m. three more wickets had fallen, and the board showed six wickets for 70 runs. Then A. W. Roberts, who had been playing in most unenterprising fashion for over an hour, began to hit out, and he scored most of his 43 runs in the next 20 minutes. J. Walls and N. Colvin then became associated in a fruitful partnership of over 40 runs, and with lusty drives and swings took the score to 150. The slowness of the scoring was due as much to the accuracy of Allcott’s bowling as to the difficult wicket. He bowled unchanged throughout the innings—4o overs in all, half of which were maidens —and had as much cunning and accuracy of length at the close of the day as at the beginning. It was a splendid performance. The Kaikorai fielding, however, was generally poor. During the last hour of play at least six reasonable chances were . missed, and the ground fielding was not impressive. The following are the scores:— Old Boys First Ininngs R.
