Sumra, who got amongst the winners at Tapanui, is a five-year-old mare by Siegfriend—Tatarepo, by Solferino —Hineamaru, by Poseidon—Forfar Gal. A Double Winner Good Cast, who did well at the Tapanui meeting, was got by Winning Hit—Hororata, by Tea Tray—Scrip, by Paper Money —Zla, by Rokeby. Good Cast scored three wins last season, and is trained by J. R. Cochrane, who also trains Sumra, another winner at the meeting Paid a Good Dividend Young Monanui, who created a surprise by finishing second in the Trial Handicap at Tapanui, is trained by J. Thistleton. Young Monanui is a five-year-old gelding by Te Monanui—Last Dance, by Last Dart —Dancing Days, by Markhope—Princess Mosca. by Stepniak. Favourite Beaten Gold Spur was made a strong favourite for the President's Hack Handicap, run at Tapanui, but lie was beaten a long way from home after looking like a winner up to about five furlongs. Gold Spur is a better horse than he showed in the race, and possibly was not at his best after the joqrney to the meeting.

Starter at Tapanul Mr W. Jones, who was starter at the Tapanui meeting in the unavoidable absence of Mr C. Gieseler through illness, was in his younger days recognised as a very capable rider on the flat. He was later a rider and reinsman, and in recent years has acted as starter to the Gore Trotting Club and for the trotting events at the Gore Racing Club's meetings. Travel-tired . * Some horses travel by float much better than others. A risk is attached to taking a horse a long journey and racing him on the same day. Some years ago Wingatui horses were taken to Oamaru and raced on the same day. They were well supported by the owner and the trainer, but ran very much below expectations. The loss of form was probably due to the swaying of the float on the journey to the meeting.
