RAILWAYS APPRENTICE

DISMISSAL NOT PERMITTED DEPARTMENT’S APPEAL FAILS The Industrial Man-power Appeal Committee—Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), H. H. Gillard, and G. F. McKellar—has given its reserved decision in the appeal by the New Zealand Railways Department, Hillside, against the refusal of the district manpower officer to grant permission to terminate the employment of Lindsay George Couch, an apprentice fitter. The appeal wa*lodged on the grounds that Couch was Unsuitable for retention by the department because of continued unsatisfactory work and conduct. The Minister of Railways had sanctioned the termination of his apprenticeship. The committee disallowed the appeal. This was a majority decision, Mr McKellar dissenting. At the hearing Mr I. B. Stevenson appeared for Couch.
