COAL DELIVERIES
CATCHING UP ON ORDERS * SOME IMPROVEMENT REPORTED Coal merchants will close next Friday until January 11 During the past few weeks they nave been endeavouring to deliver as much coal as possible, so that householders will have adequate supplies to last them over the Christmas period. The president of the Dunedin Coal Merchants’ Union, Mr D. R. Wilson, said yesterday that some merchants,, in addition to fulfilling ordei's received up to November 30, had also been able to deliver coal ordered during the first week in December. The position had been improved a little, Mr Wilson said, by an increase in the output of coal from the Kaitangata mines during the past few weeks. There had been no relief, however, in the way of supplies from the Southland mines, most of which were still being diverted to the Railway Department. It is understood that the Railway Department has been successful in building up fairly good reserve stocks which should enable it to operate a full service over the holiday period.
