NOVICES AT TAPANUI Sir Garnish and Merry Lancer are two well-bred novices from J. R. Cochrane's stable engaged at Tapanui. Sir Garnish is a four-year-old gelding by Garnish (an Australian-bred horse by Ornamentation) from TotolomaL by Some Boy 11, from Morse Signal, the dam of Signal Officer, Doubleack, Trebleack and others. Merry Lancer is a three-year-old by Irish Lancer from Madam Cherry, by Te Monanui from Paigle, the dam of Peony Rose, Sally Lunn, and others. Grill’s name appears as a candidate for the Three-year-old Handicap on the Southland programme, but he is ineligible. Grill is a five-year-old. Fifty-one hack sprinters have been entered for the Makarewa Handicap on the second day of the Southland meeting. F, W Ellis has no fewer than six engaged, all of which are three-year-olds. Their ranks include Tune, Rhine Lord, Gunther, ■Absentee, Eager Lady and Waiau King, •while T. E. Pankhurst has four candidates In Starlee,' Sergeant Major, Wantwood and Sailor’s Pal. Nine two-year-olds have been nonunated for the Two-year-old Stakes on the second day’s programme of the Southland Club’s summer meeting. Though not a big field, it is a select one and includes two recent winners in Naughty Lady and Faithful Pal, both trained at Riverton. Another Riverton. entrant is Special Flight, a sister to Bonny Flight and Royal Flight The only Invercargill two-year-olds are Desert Flight and Grand Pal, the majority of two-year-olds in work at headquarters earlier in the season having been put aside. Rawhamai is down to reappear during the' holidays. The Nigger Minstrel gelding is now being trained at Riverton, but it is. a long time since he displayed any worth while form.
