JOHN McGLASHAN COLLEGE
BREAK-UP FUNCTION John McGlashan College held its breakup ceremony yesterday afternoon. The chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr T. C. Ross, presided and the principal guests were the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs D. C. Cameron. The headmaster, Mr J. Conolly, in a report on the year’s activities, said the work in the primary and preparatory departments had been particularly good, and next year, with settled conditions, definite courses, larger numbers, and a permanent staff, he expected an improvement in the standard of work in the secondary department. The audience stood in silence while Mr Conolly read the names of 28 old boys who were killed on active service. At one time, he said, no fewer than four McGlashan College old boys were members of Lieutenant-general Sir Bernard Frey berg’s personal staff. The Mayor, who delivered the address, drew the boys’ attention to their fine heritage in the beaiitiful city of Dunedin. Had they ever thought of the organisation behind the city, lie asked, of its beauty and of its traditions? There was too little realisation among the citizens to-day of what their city .offered, he added. Too ipuch was taken for granted. He atoeseed tShe need not only.for a better
knowledge of their city, but also of their Dominion, the church ahd themselves. " Master vouVself,” he said, “ and you have mastered many of the serious problems of life.” His final advice was, " Have faith in the past, believe in the present, and plan wisely for the future."
